Starting university can be exciting and something you really look forward to—but it can also feel a bit overwhelming, with loads of different expectations flying around. That’s totally normal, and something lots of new students feel.

What we do know is this: starting uni brings a wave of new impressions. You’ll meet all kinds of people who’ll shape your time as a student, experience a ton of new things, and explore a brand-new city. At the same time, you’ll be doing the most important thing of all—getting to know yourself in this new everyday life. Who are you, and what do you need to feel good?

Our top 5 tips

Our brilliant advisors have supported students for years—especially those starting fresh in a new city or at a new uni. Here are their best tips to help you get the most out of your new beginning:

1. Get involved

Your wellbeing matters—so join the bits of Freshers’ Week and social events that you feel like doing! And remember: come as you are, always. This is a time when everyone is looking to meet new people.

2. Take initiative

Say hi to someone on your course, or grab a coffee with your housemates. Where are they from? What music do they love? Do you have anything in common? Just showing a little interest can go a long way in helping someone feel seen and included.

3. Get to know your new city

Never been here before? Be curious—explore the city centre, your campus, cafés, and student societies. There’s something for everyone—find your own version of student life.

4. Breathe—it’s okay to take your time

It’s totally fine to take breaks and carve out some alone time. Making friends can take a while. Maybe your course feels different to what you expected. Maybe you’re still figuring out how to study effectively. There’s a lot happening right now, so it’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed.

5. You’re enough—just as you are!

All students have good days and tough ones—that’s part of life. Just know that you’re never alone, and Sit is always here for you.
