The optimal buzz

The optimal buzz is a project working to create a more sustainable drinking culture in Norwegian student communities. We also work to make student life more inclusive for everyone.

The optimal buzz works for a more inclusive and sustainable drinking culture in student volunteering.

Being involved in student volunteering can play an important role in reducing loneliness and supporting mental wellbeing. That’s why it’s so important that everyone feels welcome and that student volunteering provides a safe and inclusive environment.

The optimal buzz offers a range of free courses and workshops for student organisations on these topics. We can also tailor sessions to your organisation’s needs.

Facts about The optimal buzz

  • The optimal buzz refers to the uplifting effects of alcohol that can make you feel more relaxed and sociable.
  • This effect is associated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of between 0.05% and 0.10%, when the stimulating effects of alcohol are said to be strongest.
  • How quickly someone reaches this level varies considerably from person to person and depends on factors such as body size, biological sex, how quickly they drink and whether they have eaten.
  • A higher BAC increases the risk of harmful effects and alcohol-related injury.

What The optimal buzz offers

  • Alcohol policy workshop: Get guidance developing clear guidelines for alcohol, parties and inclusion in your student organisation. The aim is to create a safe and inclusive culture with clear expectations.
  • Safer party culture workshop: For student leaders and others in positions of responsibility. Participants explore their responsibilities and what it takes to create a safe and inclusive party culture.
  • Student mentor course: Prepares student mentors for their responsibilities during the welcome period, with a focus on inclusion and common challenges. The course covers topics such as drinking pressure, setting boundaries and how alcohol can affect social situations.

Annual seminars

All student organisations are invited to The optimal buzz’s annual seminars:

  • Student buddie seminar: For student buddie coordinators and organising committees, with advice and practical tools for creating a safe and inclusive welcome period.
  • Seminar on alcohol and sexual boundaries: Gives student leaders and others in positions of responsibility knowledge and tools to help prevent and handle situations involving sexual misconduct where alcohol may be involved.
