Our pedagogy and core values

Our student kindergartens expand on the Reggio Emilia Approach with focus on exploration, equality, playful community and sustainable learning in everyday life.

Our student kindergartens are inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach. Reggio Emilia is an Italian city renowned for its focus on children, childhood and democracy. This educational philosophy originated as a counter-reaction to fascism. The goal was to create a society where people dare to share thoughts, reflections and criticism, respect the opinions of others and learn together. This remains just as relevant today. We want the kindergartens of today and the future to promote freedom, equality, community and democracy.

We have designed our own core values based on this approach, whereby our pedagogical work is controlled by generosity, exploration, equality and playful community.

Generosity

We aim for our student kindergartens to be characterized by generosity, respect and communities where we listen, respect and wish each other joy and success. We see formative development as a lifelong process that occurs in interaction with people, surroundings and experiences. Diversity enriches us with new and deeper perspectives and understanding. We believe the kindergarten should be a place for learning about ourselves, each other and the surroundings – with a focus on generosity.

Exploration

We view the children as competent, curious and exploratory. In a changing world, our pedagogy also needs to evolve. Children must be allowed to express themselves in different ways so they can understand and influence society. We attach importance to exploration among children, parents, and educators so we can learn together.

Equality

Our student kindergartens meet everyone with respect, value diversity and ensure that the children are seen and heard. We follow the children’s lead and facilitate participation. Pedagogical documentation is our tool for reflection and development in collaboration with children, parents and staff.

Playful communities

Play has a key role at student kindergartens. It promotes creativity and is important for the children’s formative development. We facilitate playful communities through good meeting places for interaction between the children, educators, arena and materials.

Progression

At our student kindergartens, we use a process-based approach for documentation that illustrates learning processes and progress. We explore common ground, creating good meeting places and a playful community. Pedagogical documentation forms the basis for focus areas where we reflect on the engagement of the children, parents and educators throughout the year.
