Cleaning tips

Here is a list of what should be cleaned in your house, and how often. The lists can be a starting point for a cleaning list in your shared kitchen, or as a list of tips for what to clean when in your apartment.

Should be cleaned daily / after use when needed

  • Benchtops and walls near benchtops
  • The stove top
  • Tables and chairs are wiped
  • Taps and sinks in the kitchen
  • The microwave oven
  • Remove all waste (and wipe aways spots around the bin)

Should be cleaned weekly

  • Empty and clean the filter in the dishwasher
  • The sides and inside edges of the dishwasher door
  • Inside the stove, including baking tray and cooking grate
  • Spots and food remains in the refrigerator
  • The floors of all rooms
  • Tables and chairs are cleaned
  • Taps and sinks in the bathroom
  • Toilet, both inside and out

Should be cleaned every fortnight

  • Doors and door frames
  • The fronts of kitchen cupboards and drawers
  • The underside of all cupboards over benchtops in the kitchen
  • Kitchen fan over the stove, including washing the filter
  • Wipe dust from all light fixtures
  • Doors, walls and floor of the shower cabinet / Walls and floor of the shower area

Should be cleaned monthly

  • The bathroom drain
  • Windows and window sills, both inside and out
  • Pull out the stove and clean behind it
  • Floor skirting
  • Wipe the blinds and the curtain rod/rail
  • Air valves
  • Light switches and power outlets
  • Electric wall heaters, both front and back
  • Fire extinguishers

Should be cleaned before every summer and christmas holiday

  • Defrost the freezer
  • Thoroughly wash the refrigerator, inside and out, both front and back
  • Empty and clean kitchen cupboards, drawers and shelves, both inside and out
  • Ceilings and walls of every room
  • Curtains
